Cancer Recurrence and Anesthetic Technique: A “Wake Up Call”
نویسنده
چکیده
While the definitive treatment for cancer is frequently surgery, the perioperative period represents one of the greatest risk factors for tumor cell proliferation and eventual metastases [1-3]. Several studies have demonstrated that surgery stimulates neuroendocrine and cytokine stress responses, suppresses cell-mediated immunity, disperses tumor cell emboli, and promotes tumor growth and metastasis in animal models [46]. As anesthesiologists and pain specialists, we may be no less responsible for the recurrence of cancer and the long-term outcome of oncologic patients than our surgical colleagues. Several retrospective studies have recently evaluated the impact of anesthetic technique on cancer recurrence following oncologic surgery.

ABSTRACT Propofol is a IV anesthetic which produces hypnosis and bispectral index (BIS), a parameter derived from the electroencephalograph (EEG), target of this study is comparing wake up time after termiation of surgery at control group which received constant dose of propofol with study group which received variable dose of propofol within BIS monitoring. This study performed on fif...
متن کاملThe μ-opioid receptor in cancer progression: is there a direct effect?
T HERE has been increasing interest in the role of anesthetic drugs and opioids in cancer recurrence and metastasis. Epidemiologic studies in this area have suggested that patients who receive general anesthesia with opioids rather than local or regional anesthetics have a greater rate of cancer recurrence. Several retrospective studies have shown a reduced incidence of cancer recurrence after ...
متن کاملLong term follow up of recurrent uterine cervical cancer: A Case Report
Background and Aim: Carcinoma of the uterine cervix is a significant cause of mortality because of malignancy in women. Radiotherapy is a major treatment modality for invasive cervical cancer with good treatment outcome in early-stage patients. However, substantial treatment failures still occur in the advanced-stage patients. In this case report a long term follow up of a 58 years old woman wi...

متن کاملSensitivity and Specificity of CA 15-3 in Detection of Breast Cancer Recurrence
Background: The value of CA15-3(cancer antigen 15-3) marker in early detection of breast cancer recurrence has been studied in several prospective trials. But the results of these studies are different. This may be due to variable cutoff points used for analysis, different intervals between CA15-3 measurements and the differences between patients population. This study was done to examine the p...
